Attorney Paul Deloughery was raised in a family where the entrepreneurial spirit was highly valued and ownership of a successful family business was highlighted as a key to success. When Paul was sixteen years old, his father's unexpected early death revealed that successful business ownership means much more than simply keeping up appearances of a wealthy lifestyle. Paul's family discovered that their family activities, club memberships, and house on a golf course in Rochester, Minnesota, was financed by hand-to-mouth income from whatever the family business could generate each month. His father's death left Paul's mother with a significant debt to creditors, burdensome tax obligations, and no exit strategy for selling the business at a profit in case the worst happened.
